The role of Giotto di Bondone in the development of Italian art is difficult to overestimate. It was thanks to him that a completely new approach to the image of the spatial dimension in the paintings appeared, they received depth and volume. For the most part, the artist worked on painting churches, images of frescoes, icons. In his work, traditional motifs of Christian myths prevail, but the hand of the master is recognizable in his every creation.
The crucifixion of Christ captured the tragic moment of the death of the Son of God on Mount Calvary. The thin white figure of the Savior is the center of the picture. Christ seems to soar in the air, barely held by the crossbeams of the cross. The nimbus above his bowed head closes the support pillar, and it seems that arms spread out to the sides soar in the air, themselves holding the crossbar on their shoulders.
A figure wrapped in a scarlet cloak crouched at a pillar at the feet of Christ in a frenzied outburst. Who is this woman? Mary Magdalene, a repentant harlot? On the left hand of the hanging figure, on the ground, a group of four women, their heads covered with nimbuses. In the center - an old woman in a black mourning cloak with a covered head, grief-stricken mother. To the right of Christ are his apostles, looking at the savior with sorrow and fear. Above the head of one of them, the halo of holiness is also visible.
In the background are mounted horse guards with peaks guarding Christ. They look bewildered, their gaze fixed on the sky, where angels soar. All of them are in black with red wings, except for two, at the very top of the cross, wearing a red robe and black wings.
The careful study of all the details is striking: the picture is filled with life and tragedy, but not despair. Peace and tranquility on the face of Christ leave a gracious sensation in the viewer, a sense of hope, involvement in something great.
