Vladimir Makovsky has always been able to perfectly convey everyday scenes from the life of the common people. Certain features of his artistic style make it possible to find a common concept and technique from paintings of different subjects, with the help of which the author allows us to easily penetrate the Russian soul.
One of these works was the canvas "On a Hot Day". We observe how a wealthy family went for a walk to the pond. The boys are busy fishing, apparently not entirely successful. A girl reads a book, mother monitors the successes of her daughter. The governess encourages the eldest son, putting his hand on his shoulder. It is evident that the boy was disappointed in his occupation and depressed.
The faces of each family member show how tired they are from the sultry sun. Mother is hiding from persistent rays by a white elegant umbrella. Exhausted and tired, they continue to go about their business, probably out of boredom. Judging by the form of the sons, there is no head of the family in the picture, their father may hold some kind of military post.
The surrounding landscape is rich and lush: mighty trees, lush greenery, a picturesque pond overgrown with water lilies. But even this freshness is not enough to cool off a little on a nice summer day. The color of the picture is lively and rich, showing all the colors of Russian nature. The author writes it with decisive, natural, strong strokes, which perfectly convey the nature of the scenes in the fresh air.
Nothing violates the atmosphere of calm and silence, only the rare rustling of leaves, and the twittering of forest birds. Even the float froze sleepily in the water. In this heat, everyone seeks relaxation and tranquility. It is this impression that the picture creates - a feeling of blissful peace, when everything goes well, and everything is fine.
