“Two Cut Sunflowers” - these are three paintings from the first series of the Paris series “Sunflowers”, painted by Van Gogh in August and September 1887.

In total, the first series had four paintings (the first depicted four sunflowers, the next three - two). All of them depicted cut sunflowers, but the background was of different colors. The artist seems to be looking for harmony in a combination of huge yellow colors and background.

In the first picture, Van Gogh writes two cut-off sunflowers like a sketch, sharp strokes, a mixture of different colors only structurally distinguish sunflowers against a dark green background, they do not have their yellowness.

The color scheme of the whole picture is dull and dark, inherent in Van Gogh until the Paris period.

The second representative of the series “Two Cut Sunflowers” is already saturated with a riot of colors, mainly a yellow and red palette, the sunflower flowers are already fully deployed by their “soul” to the viewer. The outlines acquired clarity and constructiveness, the dark core of the sunflower and its yellow wilting petals are already clearly separated. The background also changed, there are practically no dark tones in it, bright colors took possession of the entire canvas. And the last picture of this series acquired a completely different style of writing. The composition seemed to be transferred from the first picture of “Two Cut Sunflowers” and turned from a fuzzy sketch into a bright, screaming portrait of sunflowers. Harmony achieved - bright yellow flowers on a bright blue background. Sunflowers seemed to come to life and strive to meet the viewer's gaze, the advanced sadness of their wilting.

Van Gogh associated himself with sunflowers that live in harmony with cosmic rhythms.
